The Conversation - The King who bats like a millionaire !!
Kings is someone who is abundantly gifted when it comes to sporting skills. Lazy elegance is a phrase you would associate with him and sometimes its that very same laziness that gets him into trouble.
Fast on his feet and even faster with his wit, Kings in essence is what maidaan cricket is all about. How he wishes that he could be here on both days of the weekend but he is the quintessential team man and sporting soul that you need to have around you. Leg umpiring is not a strong suite but he has hands that need to be preserved for the magic it pulls out of the bag.
Hope you enjoy this one with the one and only KINGS!!
1. "Form is temporary, but class is permanent." Do you believe in that ?
Since I have been a longtime member of the current 'Form' and only had a short stint with 'Class,' I’m probably not the best person to comment on this old saying!!
2. It appears you love to bowl but probably don't get enough chances. What do you think you
need to do to roll your arms over more often?
I can only hope that occasionally the regular bowlers won't show-up, forcing the captain to make me bowl :-)
3. Your fielding is legendary and some of the catches you have taken is even more breathtaking.
What goes through your mind before you decide to pull off the outrageous rather than taking a
safer option?
Nothing much, just a spur-of-the-moment decision where my instinct says it would be safer to go for the catch with one hand rather than risk botching it with two!!
4. You have been in a rut as far as your batting goes. Have you analysed what is going wrong
and what you need to do?
With plenty of batsmen in our team, I don't have the luxury of telling my captain the old cricketing cliche “I need to spend time in the crease” to get the 'class' back and only to be told that we are happy with your 'form' !! Therefore, the only option to come out of the rut is to avoid poor shot selection.
5. Among the newer lot of folks who are now playing with us, who has impressed you the most and why?
KG is the latest surprise of Maidan cricket....good with both bad and ball. He has amazing 'hand-eye' coordination while batting, but not when fielding!
6. What does it take for you to get charged up at the maidaan?
I love the charged-up atmosphere and the intensity of the Maidaan cricket. But to be honest, I look forward to Saturday morning for the animated discussion, the altercation and the chuckles that follow a long week. The most recent dispute that sparked another brilliant idea "people with a science background should take on the role of umpires " - I come to the maidaan looking forward to savour such ‘gems’ and to cause more confusion with the interpretation of maidaan rules during the heated exchanges!
